Geckos - Cute, but Their Messes at Home are Annoying
Having problems with geckos in the house? Discover effective methods to repel them and learn how to make your home more comfortable.
TL;DR | Quick Summary
Sometimes, when you smoke, a trivial thing can distract you from Enlightenment - like gecko kebabs. Those who have seen it will understand. I love geckos, I even dedicated a couple of stories to them. However, when you live in Asia for a long time, you start to see their downsides. Our common cat used to control the geckos, but now she lives separately with my wife.
I tried to use this problem as a support for spiritual growth and not to notice, to see the beauty in them, to accept, to let go. This taught me humility. I started cleaning it up. Sweeping. Picking it up. Useless. Something needs to be done about this! And I dug up some cool methods. It turns out the opposition has been going on for a long time:
1. Reduce the food source (most important)
The gecko comes to life + mosquitoes/midges.
What helps: • Install mosquito traps or lamp traps away from the house. • Use yellow warm lamps on the balcony - they do not attract insects. • Turn off the lighting inside the house at night, especially near windows.
Fewer insects → less reason to live inside.
2. Natural repellents (they really dislike smells)
Geckos are very sensitive to smells.
The best ones are:
1. Onion tincture or pieces of onion
The strong smell repels them for many hours.
2. Essential oils • eucalyptus • citronella • mint • lemongrass
Mix 10-15 drops in 200 ml of water and spray in corners, ledges, behind cabinets, where they usually sit.
3. Garlic
A couple of crushed cloves in the corner really works.
Do not use chemical snake repellents - they are harmful to humans.
3. Remove cozy dark places
Geckos choose: • upper corners of walls, • ledges, beams, • holes behind the air conditioner, • tops of cabinets.
What helps: • close the upper gaps with thin plastic strips, rather than reconstruction; • apply sealant around the air conditioner and pipes; • put shields so they can't get behind the cabinet.
4. Double-sided tape or sticky strips (gentle method)
Geckos really dislike sticky surfaces. You can stick thin strips around the perimeter of windows/doors - they will stop going there.
(They do not stick permanently - it’s just unpleasant and they leave.)
5. Electronic repellents (ultrasound)
They do not work perfectly, but in combination, they give a good effect.
It's better to place: • one near the entrance, • one in the kitchen, • one in the living room.
6. Lure them outside (this works surprisingly well)
Make the outside area more attractive than the inside:
Life hack: Place a small lamp outside the house (balcony, porch, terrace) - so insects fly there.
After a couple of days, the geckos will move there themselves.
7. What NOT to do • Do not use poisons - dangerous for people, children, animals, and for karma. • Do not chase them away with your hands - they will return. • Do not seal the house “tight” - they will still find a gap.
Ideal scheme for Thailand
If you need real results, they say you can do it this way:
- Hang a light outside to attract insects there.
- Inside - yellow light + less lighting near windows.
- Spray citronella or mint in the corners.
- Seal the largest gaps with thin sealant.
- Refresh the smells once a week.
In 3-7 days, the geckos will move their “residence” outside and stop messing in the house ✨
Quick Answer
To combat geckos in the house, use natural repellents, reduce food sources, and create less attractive conditions inside.
