In a significant crackdown on illegal cannabis operations, New York has closed more than 1,000 unlicensed cannabis retailers across the state. This effort, spearheaded by the New York State Illicit Cannabis Enforcement Task Force, involved collaboration between multiple agencies and local authorities, including Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The initiative aims to curb the proliferation of illegal cannabis sales and support the burgeoning legal market

Estimates suggested that New York City alone had approximately 2,900 illegal cannabis sellers, vastly outnumbering the 60 licensed dispensaries in the city and 150 statewide. The recent closures targeted 779 illegal shops in New York City, with an additional 230 shut down throughout the state. These actions are part of a broader strategy to eliminate unlicensed cannabis operations that potentially endanger public health and undermine licensed businesses

Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of these enforcement actions by highlighting the dangers posed by illegal cannabis products, particularly those targeting minors. She stated, 'Earlier this year, I enacted new enforcement powers to swiftly and permanently close the thousands of illegal cannabis retailers across New York.' Hochul's administration has been proactive in implementing policies to strengthen the legal cannabis industry and ensure consumer safety

The crackdown has had a noticeable impact on the legal cannabis market in New York. Legal dispensaries have reported a significant increase in sales, with some seeing a rise of over 100% since enforcement efforts began. Business owners like Osbert Orduña of The Cannabis Place have expressed support for the initiative, noting that the closure of illegal shops has allowed their businesses to thrive and expand, resulting in increased hiring and economic growth

Looking ahead, New York's commitment to regulating the cannabis market is expected to bolster the state's economy, with projections indicating that cannabis sales could surpass $1 billion by 2024. The efforts to dismantle the illegal market are part of a comprehensive plan to create a robust and equitable cannabis industry. The Cannabis Enforcement Task Force, established in May 2023, continues to play a crucial role in these endeavors, coordinating efforts to remove illegal operations and support legal businesses
