3-FPM Emerges as a New Stimulant in European Markets Despite Legal Hurdles

3-FPM, a new stimulant derived from phenmetrazine, gains traction in Europe amid varying legal statuses and safety concerns

Key Points

  • 13-FPM is a new stimulant derived from phenmetrazine
  • 2It is gaining popularity despite bans in some European countries
  • 33-FPM is noted for its dopamine selectivity and moderate effects
  • 4The market appeal is due to its legality and online availability
  • 5Safety concerns persist due to unknown long-term effects

A new stimulant known as 3-fluorophenmetrazine (3-FPM) has recently gained attention in European markets. This compound is a derivative of phenmetrazine, a drug once used in Spain as an appetite suppressant until 2000. As a new psychoactive substance (NPS), 3-FPM is part of a trend where old compounds are slightly modified to create new stimulants

The emergence of 3-FPM is significant in a market saturated with numerous synthetic stimulants. Unlike many other NPS that have failed to make an impact due to mediocre effects and unknown toxicity, 3-FPM has been noted for its more favorable reception. Historically, phenmetrazine was popular in Northern Europe, particularly in Sweden, where it was preferred over traditional stimulants like speed due to its euphoric effects and ease of vaporization

The chemical 3-FPM first appeared in a 2010 patent exploring phenmetrazine analogs. It is known for its selectivity for dopamine, which is believed to make its effects more pleasant and last between 5 to 8 hours when taken orally. Users have reported effects such as increased concentration and sociability, although it is considered less potent than amphetamines

Regulatory responses to 3-FPM vary across Europe. While it is banned in countries like Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK, it remains available in other regions. The substance is sold in various forms, often mixed with lidocaine to mitigate the intense nasal discomfort when snorted. However, the long-term safety of 3-FPM remains uncertain, and it is advised to avoid excessive use of the anesthetic additive

The market appeal of 3-FPM is not driven by its cost, which ranges from 15 to 20 euros per gram, making it more expensive than some illegal alternatives. Instead, its legality and the convenience of purchasing it online are significant factors for its users. Some individuals prefer the unique effects of 3-FPM, which they liken to a 'supercaffeine' rather than a potent stimulant

Despite its availability, the potential risks associated with 3-FPM are not fully understood. Although phenmetrazine, its predecessor, was used as a medication, this does not guarantee the safety of 3-FPM. Historical examples, such as the withdrawal of fenfluramine due to heart-related side effects, highlight the need for caution. As the market for NPS continues to evolve, 3-FPM's future will depend on further research and regulatory decisions
