Key Points

  • 1Mayor Halsema proposes changes to King's Day celebrations in Amsterdam
  • 2Plans aim to manage crowd sizes and enhance safety by 2026
  • 3Designated event zones and extended festival hours are part of the proposal
  • 4Research indicates current celebrations pose safety risks
  • 5Debate on the proposals is scheduled for January

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema has announced plans to significantly alter the way King's Day is celebrated in the city, aiming to manage the growing crowds and alleviate pressure on emergency services. The proposed changes are set to take effect in 2026 and are designed to make the festival more manageable, with clearer limits in the city center and a reduction in visitors from outside the capital

Research commissioned by the city highlights that King's Day has evolved from a local celebration into a chaotic, large-scale festival, posing safety risks due to extreme congestion and alcohol misuse. The study points out that the event is not always safe or festive, and often lacks the unique character of Amsterdam

Halsema has considered various scenarios for the festival's future and has chosen a moderate approach. This includes designating specific areas of the inner city, such as Westerstraat and Noordermarkt, as official event zones starting next year. While visitors from outside Amsterdam would still be welcome, their numbers would be limited, though the exact method of achieving this is not yet clear

Additional measures under consideration involve extending the operating hours of festivals on the city's outskirts to decrease central congestion. There will also be an increase in checks on illegal alcohol sales and unauthorized street parties. Halsema plans to discuss these proposals with city councillors in January, expressing confidence that these steps will lead to meaningful change over time

Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors descend upon Amsterdam for King's Day, primarily congregating in the city center. The proposed changes aim to distribute the festivities more evenly across the city, enhancing safety and enjoyment for all participants
