In a significant development for Chile's medical cannabis landscape, the country's first domestically developed cannabis-based medication, Cannabiol, has been launched. This new medication is now available in a municipal pharmacy located north of Santiago, providing a new option for patients suffering from chronic pain associated with neurological diseases or cancer. This marks a pivotal moment in Chile's journey towards embracing medical cannabis, following the legalization of medical cannabis in 2015

Cannabiol is the result of efforts by Knop Laboratories, a Chilean firm specializing in phytotherapy, which secured a special permit from the Instituto de Salud Pública (ISP) to distribute the medication. Prior to this, Chile relied on imported medical cannabis products. The introduction of Cannabiol represents a breakthrough in local production, leveraging the country's own resources and expertise

The cannabis used in Cannabiol is sourced from Tierra Santa, a plantation in Quinamávida, approximately 350 kilometers south of Santiago. This plantation is managed by Fundación Daya, an organization advocating for the medical use of cannabis. Fundación Daya has established partnerships with 15 municipalities to distribute the medication, ensuring that around 2,500 individuals can access this treatment. Additionally, 200 more patients have registered to obtain ISP authorization for Cannabiol

Despite progress in medical cannabis, the sale of recreational cannabis remains illegal in Chile, although private consumption is permitted. The Chilean Congress is currently debating legislation that could regulate the consumption and self-cultivation of cannabis, potentially altering the legal landscape further. This ongoing debate highlights the complex regulatory environment surrounding cannabis in Chile

Looking ahead, the launch of Cannabiol could significantly impact the lives of those suffering from chronic pain, offering an affordable treatment option at $75 for a 30 mL bottle. The initiative also underscores Chile's growing capacity to produce its own medical cannabis solutions, potentially reducing reliance on imports and fostering local economic growth. As the country continues to navigate its cannabis policies, the success of Cannabiol may pave the way for further advancements in the sector
