Canadian cannabis company Cronos has made a significant move by acquiring Canadelaar, the largest legal cannabis producer in the Netherlands, for €57.5 million. This acquisition marks the first time a foreign investor has taken over a Dutch cannabis grower, highlighting the growing interest in the Dutch cannabis market. Canadelaar is a key player in the Dutch government's regulated cannabis experiment, which aims to bring the cannabis market out of the illegal circuit

Based in Voorne aan Zee, Canadelaar supplies cannabis and hash to nearly all 72 coffeeshops involved in the Dutch government's cannabis experiment. This initiative, which expanded in April, now includes 10 local councils and requires participating coffeeshops to source their cannabis from licensed growers. Canadelaar's operations also include the production and packaging of edible products and pre-rolled joints, with an annual output of approximately 20 tonnes of flower heads

Cronos CEO Mike Gorenstein expressed confidence in the Netherlands' cannabis culture, noting the country's responsible approach to adult-use cannabis. He highlighted the potential for market expansion if the experiment extends beyond the current 562 coffeeshops. Cronos, primarily active in Canada, sees this acquisition as a strategic step into a market with significant growth potential, as evidenced by its recent 26% share price increase
