EIHA's Toxicological Studies Aim to Boost European Hemp Industry

The EIHA is conducting significant toxicological studies on THC to support the European hemp industry's growth and regulatory compliance

Key Points

  • 1EIHA leads toxicological studies on THC in Europe
  • 2Studies aim to enhance hemp industry regulation
  • 3UK FSA lists EIHA members in novel foods registry
  • 4€3.5 million invested in CBD and THC safety studies
  • 5EU sets maximum THC levels in hemp food products

The European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) is spearheading significant toxicological studies on THC as part of its efforts to bolster the rapidly growing hemp industry across Europe. These studies are poised to play a crucial role in shaping the regulatory landscape for hemp-derived products, particularly as the industry seeks to expand its market presence. Lorenza Romanese, the managing director of EIHA, emphasized the importance of these studies in ensuring product safety and compliance with evolving regulations

The EIHA's initiative comes in the wake of the Kanavape case in 2020, which has significantly influenced the trajectory of the European hemp industry. The case highlighted the need for clear regulatory frameworks and has been a catalyst for the industry's growth. Romanese explained that the EIHA is focused on translating industry insights into policy messages to address market challenges and ensure a cohesive approach to hemp regulation across Europe

Recently, the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) published a public list of novel foods, which included several EIHA consortium members. While the EIHA welcomed this development, Romanese noted some initial inaccuracies in the list, which have since been rectified. The inclusion of EIHA members on the FSA list signifies a step forward in the recognition and regulation of hemp products, though further toxicological evaluations are needed to finalize product safety assessments

The comprehensive toxicological studies being conducted by the EIHA are extensive and include analyses of CBD isolates, full-spectrum extracts, and THC levels. With an investment of €3.5 million, these studies aim to establish safe consumption levels and define appropriate safety thresholds. Romanese shared that preliminary results for CBD isolates show no adverse effects, indicating their safety at tested levels, with further results expected by 2023 for THC

The establishment of a maximum THC level in hemp-based food products by the European Commission marks a significant milestone for the industry. This regulation provides a unified standard across EU member states, enhancing market stability and consumer safety. Looking ahead, the EIHA's ongoing studies could further influence regulatory adjustments, potentially leading to increased THC limits and broader acceptance of hemp-derived products
