Five Danish Political Parties Advocate for Cannabis Legalization

Five Danish political parties have united to support cannabis legalization, citing the need for new approaches as current laws have failed to reduce consumption

Key Points

  • 1Five Danish parties support cannabis legalization
  • 2Current laws have failed to reduce cannabis use
  • 3Proposed trial period for legal cannabis sales
  • 4Legal market could reduce illegal sales
  • 5Criticism of law enforcement actions in Christiania

In a groundbreaking move, five Danish political parties have jointly declared their support for the legalization of cannabis. The coalition includes L’Alternative, the Unity List, the Socialist People's Party, the Social Liberal Party, and the Liberal Alliance. This push for legalization comes despite cannabis being illegal in Denmark since 1955, with laws having been tightened five times over the years. The parties argue that despite these stringent regulations, cannabis consumption has not decreased, prompting the need for a new approach

Marlene Borst Hansen of the Social Liberal Party suggests a three-year trial period during which cannabis could be legally purchased, potentially through pharmacies. This proposal aims to explore alternative methods of regulation and distribution, as current strategies have failed to curb cannabis use. The party L’Alternative also supports the idea of pharmacies as possible distribution points, indicating a shift towards more controlled and safer access to cannabis

The coalition believes that legalizing cannabis could significantly reduce demand from illegal sellers. Torsten Gejl, spokesperson for L’Alternative, emphasized the importance of setting competitive prices in the legal market to undermine the illegal market. He stated that if the legal market could outprice illegal sellers, it could substantially diminish the latter's presence. Gejl also highlighted the need for strict measures against illegal sales to minors, particularly those conducted by organized crime groups like biker gangs

Recent law enforcement actions in Christiania, a Copenhagen neighborhood known for its open cannabis trade, have been criticized by the coalition as futile and resource-draining. The parties argue that these efforts only serve to bolster organized crime, which profits from the prohibition. They suggest that legalization could redirect resources towards more productive uses and reduce the influence of illegal networks

Looking forward, the parties aim to initiate discussions on how to implement a regulated cannabis market in Denmark. They are advocating for policies that prioritize public health and safety while acknowledging the economic potential of a legal cannabis industry. This movement reflects a broader trend in Europe towards reconsidering cannabis laws, as countries explore new regulatory frameworks that balance control with demand
