Italian Association Agricanapa Promotes Hemp as a Solution to Global Hunger

Agricanapa, an Italian association, promotes hemp cultivation to combat global hunger and support sustainable agriculture, presenting innovative solutions at NASA's Space Apps Challenge

Key Points

  • 1Agricanapa promotes hemp for sustainable agriculture and global hunger solutions
  • 2The association cultivates 70 hectares of hemp for local food products
  • 3Hemp project presented at NASA's Space Apps Challenge to address African food insecurity
  • 4Hemp is highlighted as a sustainable, low-cost crop requiring minimal resources
  • 5Agricanapa's initiative reflects a trend towards sustainable industrial hemp use

In a bid to address global hunger and promote sustainable agriculture, three Italians have founded Agricanapa, an association dedicated to the cultivation and education of hemp. Established in 2014 near Brescia, Italy, the organization aims to demonstrate how environmental protection can align with responsible agricultural practices. The founders, Stefano Chen Sipeng, Chiara Chiesa, and Federico Cremonini, are committed to developing a sustainable supply chain for hemp, from cultivation to commercialization

Agricanapa operates on 70 hectares of hemp cultivation, transforming the seeds into food products such as edible oil and flour. These products are then supplied to local businesses to produce items like pasta and beer, thereby fostering a local economy centered around hemp. The association's approach not only supports local industries but also showcases hemp's versatility as a crop that requires minimal resources to thrive

In a significant move to expand their impact, the Agricanapa team presented a hemp cultivation project at the Space Apps Challenge, an international event sponsored by NASA. The project aims to tackle food insecurity in Africa by leveraging hemp's low-cost and low-maintenance growth requirements. "With just €15, you can cultivate 1,000 square meters of land without needing fertilizers or herbicides," explained Chiara Chiesa, highlighting hemp's potential to produce substantial yields with limited water resources

Federico Cremonini elaborated on the project's vision, emphasizing hemp's role as a sustainable and nutritious food source that can complement local agricultural practices. "We asked ourselves what sustainable and nutritious crop could work alongside local cultures that have exhausted the land," Cremonini stated, positioning hemp as a viable solution for regions facing agricultural challenges. Hemp's comprehensive utility—from its roots to seeds—underscores its potential as a transformative crop

The initiative by Agricanapa reflects a broader trend in recognizing hemp's industrial properties as beneficial for both environmental and economic purposes. As the global community seeks solutions to food scarcity and environmental degradation, projects like Agricanapa's highlight the potential of hemp to contribute significantly to sustainable development. The association's efforts could inspire similar initiatives worldwide, fostering a more resilient and sustainable agricultural future
