  • 3Naturalis museum replaced original fossils with replicas
  • 4The repatriation follows previous returns to Nigeria
  • 5Artifacts will be displayed at the National Museum in Jakarta

In a significant gesture of cultural repatriation, the Netherlands has returned four crucial fossils from the Dubois collection to Indonesia. Among these is the renowned Homo Erectus skullcap, which was pivotal in identifying the extinct human species. This move is part of a broader initiative to return cultural and scientific artifacts to their countries of origin

The Dubois collection, containing approximately 28,000 fossils, has resided in the Netherlands for over a century. On Wednesday, the Naturalis museum in Leiden confirmed the return of four key pieces, including a Homo Erectus skullcap, a molar, a thigh bone, and a scratched shell. These items were personally delivered to Indonesia by the museum's director, Marcel Beukeboom, and have been replaced by replicas in the museum's display

The fossils, often referred to as the 'Java man,' were initially misidentified as ape bones. However, they were later recognized as belonging to a distinct human species that coexisted with early Homo sapiens. Discovered in the late 19th century, these fossils were initially hailed as the 'missing link' in human evolution, aligning with Charles Darwin's theories

This action marks the sixth instance of the Dutch government following a special commission's advice on repatriating artifacts. Earlier this year, the Netherlands also returned 113 bronze statues to Nigeria. The collaboration between Naturalis and Indonesian researchers continues, emphasizing the scientific importance of these fossils

Indonesia formally requested the return of the Dubois collection in 2022, and the artifacts are anticipated to be displayed at the National Museum in Jakarta. This repatriation underscores the growing international movement to return cultural and historical artifacts to their rightful homes
