New Report Reveals Diverse Demographics of U.S. Cannabis Consumers Seeking Relaxation

A new report by New Frontier Data reveals that U.S. cannabis consumers are diverse in demographics but unified in seeking relaxation

Key Points

  • 142% of U.S. adults have used cannabis and may use it again
  • 237% of current users increased consumption over the past year
  • 3Consumers are evenly split by gender and predominantly white
  • 4Most use cannabis for both recreational and medicinal purposes
  • 5Access to diverse cannabis products remains limited in many states

A comprehensive study by New Frontier Data has shed light on the diverse demographics of cannabis consumers in the United States, revealing that a significant portion of users are seeking relaxation and stress relief. Conducted in February 2023, the survey involved over 5,500 participants and highlighted that cannabis users span various backgrounds, economic statuses, and political affiliations. Despite these differences, a common thread among users is the desire to disconnect and unwind

The report found that 42% of surveyed adults have used cannabis and would likely do so again, with 37% identifying as current users. Notably, 37% of these users increased their consumption in the past year, with more than a third using cannabis every other day. Interestingly, the frequency of use did not significantly differ between states with legal adult-use cannabis markets and those without

Demographic data from the report shows a nearly equal split between male (54%) and female (46%) users, with a predominant representation of white individuals (63%), followed by Hispanic/Latino (14%) and Black (14%) communities. Age-wise, the largest group of consumers falls within the 25-44 age range, accounting for 47% of users. Moreover, 38% of consumers hold a college degree or higher, and a similar percentage have children under 18

The survey revealed that a majority of cannabis consumers use the product for both recreational and medicinal purposes, with relaxation being a primary goal. While many consume cannabis for recreation, over half of the users cited medicinal reasons such as chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. The report also noted that 94% of medical users reported health improvements since using cannabis, underscoring its therapeutic potential

Despite the legalization of adult-use cannabis in several states, access to a wide range of cannabis products remains limited. The report highlights that less than half of consumers have access to products beyond flowers, pre-rolls, and edibles. This limitation is prompting calls for regulators and producers to expand product offerings to better meet consumer needs, particularly for those seeking specific effects like pain relief or increased energy
