New Study Reveals Insights into CBD Use for Dogs

A new study explores the patterns of CBD use in dogs, revealing a growing trend and highlighting the need for further research into its long-term effects

Key Points

  • 1Study examines CBD use patterns in dogs through the Dog Aging Project
  • 2CBD use is more common in areas with legal medical cannabis access
  • 3Research indicates potential benefits for managing canine aggression
  • 4Study relies on owner-reported data, limiting causal conclusions
  • 5Researchers call for further studies on CBD's effects on dogs

A recent study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science sheds light on the patterns of cannabidiol (CBD) use among dog owners, highlighting a growing trend in the use of this supplement for canine health and behavior management. The research, part of the Dog Aging Project (DAP), underscores the need for further investigation into the long-term effects of CBD on dogs. This project, which gathers data from over 50,000 dog owners, aims to explore how various factors such as genetics, diet, and environment impact the health and aging process in dogs

The study utilized survey data from the Dog Aging Project to analyze demographic features, health status, and behavioral changes associated with CBD use in dogs. It focused on how both dog and owner demographics influence the decision to use CBD. The researchers also examined cross-sectional associations between canine health conditions and CBD usage, as well as behavioral changes linked to age and long-term CBD use

Key findings from the study indicate that CBD use is more prevalent in areas where medical cannabis is legally accessible. Owners often use CBD for specific health conditions, and a notable decrease in aggressive behaviors was observed in dogs receiving CBD. However, the study relies heavily on owner-reported data, which may introduce bias and lacks quantifiable measurements, limiting the ability to establish causal relationships

Despite these limitations, the study highlights a significant interest in CBD as a potential tool for managing canine behavior and health. Researchers emphasized the need for more detailed studies to better understand the optimal dosages and administration methods for CBD in dogs. They also pointed out that the current data reflects broader societal trends and beliefs about CBD and its benefits

Looking ahead, the researchers advocate for continued exploration into the mechanistic, clinical, and population-level effects of CBD on dogs. Such research could ultimately enhance the health and well-being of both dogs and humans, as understanding grows about the potential benefits and applications of CBD. As CBD becomes more accessible, this line of inquiry is increasingly important for pet owners and veterinary professionals alike
