New York State has officially launched a new campaign aimed at encouraging consumers to purchase cannabis legally from licensed dispensaries. Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, the initiative seeks to inform the public about the benefits and safety of buying cannabis from authorized outlets. This move comes as part of New York's ongoing efforts to establish a regulated cannabis market following the legalization of cannabis in 2021

The campaign, titled "Why Buy Legal New York," was unveiled on April 20. It focuses on three core objectives: protecting public health, promoting social equity, and reinvesting in communities. Despite the limited number of licensed dispensaries currently operating, the campaign aims to educate the public on the significance of legal cannabis purchases and the associated benefits

Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of informed consumer choices in her statement, noting that the campaign is designed to provide New Yorkers with the necessary information for responsible cannabis use. "As we continue to build a healthier and more equitable cannabis market, I am proud to launch this important public education campaign to promote legal and safer cannabis purchases," she stated

The initiative is largely digital, aiming to highlight the risks of unregulated cannabis products, which often lack lab testing for safety and potency. Tremaine Wright, chair of New York's cannabis regulatory body, expressed excitement about the campaign's potential to promote safe and legal cannabis consumption. "By supporting licensed dispensaries, consumers can be assured of receiving safe, properly labeled products while supporting their local communities," she said

Educational materials, including a "Guide to Safer Cannabis Consumption" and information on locating legal dispensaries, are central to the campaign. These resources are designed to reach cannabis consumers aged 21 and over, providing them with comprehensive knowledge about legal cannabis use. The materials are accessible online to ensure wide reach and engagement

Chris Alexander, executive director of New York's Office of Cannabis Management, highlighted the campaign's goal to inform consumers about both the risks and benefits of cannabis use. He encouraged consumers to explore the state's diverse range of licensed cannabis dispensaries, which offer a variety of safe products. "Our goal is to empower consumers to make informed decisions and ensure they have access to the safest products available," Alexander said

The "Why Buy Legal New York" campaign represents a significant step in New York's broader strategy to foster a robust legal cannabis market. As the state continues to expand its cannabis industry, the focus remains on ensuring consumer safety and supporting economic and social goals. This initiative is part of New York's commitment to a sustainable and equitable cannabis industry
