In a landmark development for Quebec's cannabis market, the Société Québécoise du Cannabis (SQDC) has introduced cannabis-infused edibles, marking the first time such products are available in the province. As of Tuesday, consumers can purchase blackcurrant and cinnamon bites from the Solei brand, featuring a THC:CBD ratio of 1:2 with 5mg of THC and 10mg of CBD per serving. This move represents a significant shift in the SQDC's strategy, which previously avoided edibles due to concerns about their appeal to minors
Since the legalization of cannabis in Canada in 2018, Quebec had limited its offerings to products like high-quality flowers and pre-rolled joints, deliberately excluding edibles. The decision to now include these products reflects a broader effort to attract consumers to the legal market and away from illicit sources. Fabrice Giguère, a spokesperson for the SQDC, emphasized that these edibles offer a safer consumption method by eliminating the need for combustion, which is associated with smoking
The introduction of edibles in Quebec comes with stringent regulations to ensure they do not appeal to minors. The SQDC requires that these products, like those from Solei, are not visually enticing in terms of shape, color, texture, taste, or packaging. This contrasts with other regions like Ontario and the United States, where edibles often resemble candy and are marketed more attractively. Despite these restrictions, Solei, owned by cannabis giant Tilray, is enthusiastic about the collaboration with SQDC
Blair MacNeil, president of Tilray Canada, expressed satisfaction with the new partnership, highlighting the company's commitment to developing a responsible and secure legal cannabis market. He noted that the introduction of these edibles is part of a strategy to innovate within the market while ensuring consumer safety. The partnership aims to expand the range of products available to consumers, potentially increasing the legal market's appeal
Looking ahead, the SQDC plans to continue diversifying its product offerings, with more edible options anticipated in the coming months. This initiative is part of a broader trend across Canada as provinces seek to refine and expand their legal cannabis markets. By providing more variety and safer consumption options, Quebec hopes to further diminish the black market's influence and promote responsible cannabis use among its citizens
