Thailand Expands Cannabis Seed Import Options with New Transport Routes
Thailand has expanded import options for cannabis seeds, allowing transport by air, sea, and land, effective October 29, 2022, to support industry growth
Key Points
- 1Thailand allows cannabis seed imports via air, sea, and land
- 2New rules effective from October 29, 2022, replace June 2022 directive
- 3Import permits and phytosanitary certificates remain mandatory
- 4Seeds must be free from genetic modification and pest contamination
- 5Non-compliant imports may be returned or destroyed upon inspection
Thailand has introduced new regulations allowing cannabis and hemp seed imports via air, sea, and land, expanding beyond the previous air-only option. This policy change, effective from October 29, 2022, aims to facilitate more accessible importation of these seeds into the country
The announcement, made by Traisuree Taisaranakul, Deputy Government Spokesperson, follows the publication of the Department of Agriculture's new rules on the Royal Gazette. These regulations replace the earlier directive from June 7, 2022, and maintain strict import conditions while broadening transportation methods
Key changes include the removal of requirements for chemical treatment of seeds against pests, as well as the necessity to list chemicals and application rates in phytosanitary certificates. However, the stringent requirements for obtaining import permits and ensuring seeds are free from genetic modification remain intact
All imported cannabis and hemp seeds must be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate issued by the exporting country's national plant protection organization. Upon arrival in Thailand, these seeds will undergo inspection by officials to verify compliance with import regulations. Non-compliant shipments may be returned or destroyed
This regulatory update reflects Thailand's ongoing commitment to regulating cannabis and hemp while supporting the growth of its agricultural sector. By diversifying transportation options, the country aims to streamline the import process and support local industry expansion
